The Surprising Issue of Non-Compliant Pool Enclosures
You might be surprised to learn that not all pool enclosures meet compliance standards. Once compliant enclosures can develop issues due to modifications or changes over time. Registered Swimming Pool Inspectors play a vital role in identifying these non-compliance issues and guiding pool owners towards solutions.
Utilizing 1800mm High Pool Barriers to Achieve Compliance
One effective solution for certain non-compliance issues is the installation of an 1800mm high pool barrier. Let’s look at a specific example where this approach was successful. The pool enclosure in question featured three sides of pool barrier and one side of boundary fencing. A pathway led to a covered area with a separate structure at the rear of the property.
Resolving Non-Compliance in a Narrow Block
The issue arose when the pool filter equipment was housed within a structure that encroached on the Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ2) of the left pool barrier. Typically, the solution would be to either relocate the fence or move the structure. However, due to the narrow nature of the block, neither option was feasible.
The 1800mm High Fencing Solution
The solution was found in installing a section of 1800mm high fencing. Unlike standard 1200mm high pool barriers, this increased height eliminates the need for Non-Climbable Zones. However, both heights share the requirement for a 500mm clearance zone around the barrier, free from any steps, retaining walls, objects, or level changes that could reduce the effective height. Fortunately, there was enough space to meet this requirement.
Addressing Non-Compliance with an Outdoor Kitchen
A similar approach was applied to the front pool barrier, where a large outdoor kitchen had been placed within NCZ2. To avoid relocating the kitchen, the pool barrier’s height was extended to terminate under the eaves of the veranda, effectively making it unscalable and restoring compliance.
Achieving Compliance Without Major Renovations
By strategically utilizing an 1800mm high pool barrier, compliance was achieved in both instances without the need for major renovations or sacrificing the functionality of the outdoor spaces. This highlights the importance of consulting with Registered Swimming Pool Inspectors to find tailored solutions for complex compliance issues.
